Do you want to have a cozy and aromatic candle that you can make yourself at home? Do you want to have a fun and fulfilling craft project that you can enjoy and share with others? If you answered yes, then you should try making your own scented soy wax candle. It is a fun and fulfilling DIY project that will give you a high-quality and personalized candle that you can use for yourself or give as a gift.

What You Need for Your Scented Soy Wax Candle

To make your own scented soy wax candle, you will need the following materials:

  • Soy wax flakes: These are the main material that will form the body of your candle. You can use soy wax flakes, which are natural and eco-friendly. You will need enough soy wax flakes for your candle size and shape.
  • Candle wicks: These are the material that will make your candle burn and produce light. You can use any candle wicks that you like, such as cotton, hemp, or wood. You will need one candle wick for each candle.
  • Wick stickers or glue dots: These are the material that will attach your wick to the bottom of your container or jar. You can use either wick stickers or glue dots, depending on your preference and availability. You will need one wick sticker or glue dot for each wick.
  • Heat-resistant container or jar: This is the material that will hold your candle and give it a shape. You can use any heat-resistant container or jar that you like, such as glass, metal, or ceramic. You will need one container or jar for each candle.
  • Candle dye (optional): This is the material that will add color to your candle. You can use any candle dye that you like, such as liquid, powder, or chips. You can also skip this material if you prefer a natural or white candle. You will need a small amount of candle dye for each candle, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Fragrance oil or essential oil: This is the material that will add scent and flavor to your candle. You can use any fragrance oil or essential oil that you like, such as floral, fruity, or spicy. You can also mix different fragrance oils or essential oils to create your own aroma. You will need a moderate amount of fragrance oil or essential oil for each candle, following the recommended ratio based on the volume of wax used.
  • Double boiler or heat-safe container and saucepan: This is the tool that will melt your soy wax flakes. You can use either a double boiler or a heat-safe container and a saucepan, depending on your preference and availability. You will need one double boiler or heat-safe container and saucepan for the whole process.
  • Thermometer: This is the tool that will measure the temperature of your melted wax. You can use any thermometer that you like, such as digital, analog, or candy. You will need one thermometer for the whole process.
  • Stirring utensil (e.g. wooden spoon, dedicated candle-making stirrer): This is the tool that will stir your melted wax and mix it with your dye and fragrance. You can use any stirring utensil that you like, such as a wooden spoon, a dedicated candle-making stirrer, or a chopstick. You will need one stirring utensil for the whole process.
  • Clothespin or pencil (to hold the wick in place): This is the tool that will hold your wick in place while your candle cools and hardens. You can use either a clothespin or a pencil, depending on your preference and availability. You will need one clothespin or pencil for each candle.

How to Make Your Scented Soy Wax Candle

To make your own scented soy wax candle, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Clean and dry your container or jar thoroughly. This will ensure that your candle is free of any dirt or moisture that may affect its quality or appearance. If you are using a heat-resistant container or jar, you do not need to worry about the glass breaking due to heat.
  • Secure the wick to the bottom center of the container or jar. Use a wick sticker or glue dot to stick the wick to the container or jar. Make sure it is centered and straight. Wrap the wick around a clothespin or pencil and place it across the top of the container or jar. This will keep the wick in place and prevent it from falling or bending.
  • Melt the soy wax flakes in a double boiler or heat-safe container and saucepan. Fill a double boiler or saucepan with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the soy wax flakes in a heat-safe container and put it over the simmering water. Gently melt the soy wax flakes over medium heat, stirring occasionally to ensure even melting.
  • Add candle dye (optional) to the melted wax. If you want to color your candle, add a small amount of candle dye to the melted wax, following the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate amount of dye to add to achieve your desired color. Stir well to distribute the dye evenly throughout the wax.
  • Add fragrance oil or essential oil to the melted wax. Once the wax is fully melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. Add a moderate amount of fragrance oil or essential oil to the melted wax, following the recommended ratio based on the volume of wax used. Stir gently to incorporate the fragrance throughout the wax.
  • Pour the wax into the prepared container or jar. Let the wax cool to a suitable pouring temperature, typically between 120-140°F or 49-60°C. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the wax. Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared container or jar, being careful not to disturb the wick. Leave some space at the top to accommodate any shrinkage during cooling.
  • Set the wick and let the candle cool and harden. To keep the wick centered, wrap it around a clothespin or pencil and balance it across the top of the container or jar. Alternatively, use a wick centering tool or hold it in place until the wax cools and solidifies. Let the candle cool and harden completely, which usually takes a few hours. Avoid moving or disturbing the candle during this time to prevent any imperfections from forming.
  • Trim the wick and enjoy your candle. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm) above the wax surface before lighting the candle. This helps promote even burning and prevents excessive smoking. Your scented soy wax candle is now ready to use. Enjoy the warm glow and delightful fragrance it provides when lit. Always remember to follow candle safety guidelines and never leave a burning candle unattended.
